Climate migration does not necessarily mean millions of people suddenly crossing international borders. In reality, much of it happens quietly and gradually. The World Bank has estimated that, under a pessimistic climate and development scenario, climate change could contribute to as many as 216 million internal climate migrants across six regions by 2050. These figures should not be interpreted as a prediction that exactly 216 million people will move. They are scenario-based projections illustrating the potential scale of future internal migration.

What Exactly Is Climate Migration?

The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre reported that disaster displacement remained exceptionally high in 2024, with major movements occurring across multiple regions. Its 2025 Global Report highlights the interaction between disasters, conflict, poverty and climate vulnerability.
In 2024, the Americas recorded 14.5 million internal displacements, with disaster-related movements accounting for a very large share; the United States alone recorded 11 million disaster-related movements according to IDMC. South Asia also saw disaster displacement rise sharply, reaching 9.2 million internal displacements in 2024.
These figures require careful interpretation.
An "internal displacement" is a movement event, not necessarily a unique person.
One individual may be displaced multiple times.
A hurricane evacuation may be counted as one displacement event even if people later return home.
Therefore, displacement statistics should not automatically be interpreted as permanent migration.
Nevertheless, they demonstrate the scale at which environmental hazards are already affecting human mobility.
